GUWAHATI: TAI Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) organized a protest at Chachal demanding ST status before Lok Sabha poll, 2024 and Assam Assembly Election, 2026. The organization also demanded a separate Ahom land.

Addressing the media, the TAYPA president Bijoy Rajkonwar said, ”BJP government had promised to give Ahoms ST status along with five other communities namely- Moron, Moutop, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi and tea tribe. But the six communities have still not obtained ST status even though BJP led central government formed in 2014 and BJP led state government formed in the state. They demand the ST status as it was promised earlier. The state and central governments have only discussed about forming model committees. But they did not take initiative for solving this issue politically and effectively.”

The president further said, “We want ST status along with a separate Ahom land. And we have already submitted a memorandum to the President of India, the PM, Union Home Minister besides the Ministry of Tribal Affairs on March 23 and 24.

The organization informed that they will lead a continuous movement if their demands are not fulfilled before the Lok Sabha and Assam Assembly elections.
