Tenders floated for India’s longest four-lane bridge over river

GUWAHATI: Construction work on the longest bridge over any river in India is expected to get underway in Assam in the middle part of 2020. If things proceed as expected, this four-lane 20 km-long bridge over the Brahmaputra will provide the much needed fillip to road communication between Assam and Meghalaya. This proposed bridge, close to the Bangladesh border, will connect Dhubri in Assam with Phulbari in Meghalaya on National Highway-127B.

The project is being taken up with loan assistance from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The estimated cost of this work is Rs. 4,997.04 crore. While the construction period is seven years and nine months, the project is expected to be completed in 2026-27.

This work falls under the ‘North East Road Network Connectivity Improvement Project’. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), a Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, as the executing agency has already floated tender for construction of this bridge. The project envisages design, engineering, supply and construction of this bridge including approaches over River Brahmaputra.
