The Assam Adivasi Students' Association (AASA) threatens stir

GUWAHATI: The Assam Adivasi Students' Association (AASA) has threatened the State government that it will take the course of agitation if the Tea Tribe and Adivasis are not accorded the ST Status soon.

The students' body had its executive committee meeting at a village in Sonitpur district on Saturday. The meeting took a decision that if the Adivasis are not accorded the ST status by this year, they will appeal to Adivasis not to vote for the BJP in the coming Assembly election. From August 3, the Association will keep sending postcards to the Office of the Prime Minister (PMO), the RGI (Registrar General of India) and the National Scheduled Tribe Commission on the demand for ST status. On August 5, the primary committees of the Association will stage a dharna in their respective areas in support of their demand – ST status. On August 6 they will send memoranda to the deputy commissioners and on August 7 they will submit memoranda to the circle officers. This apart, they are going to stage agitation through the social media. On August 9 the Association is going to observe the World Adivasi Day by forming a human chain on the national highway attired in their traditional dress and playing traditional instruments.
