GUWAHATI: Consumers in Assam are under the threat of adulterated milk and milk products! The State Public Health Laboratory, Assam located at Bamunimaidam here has found adulterated samples of milk and milk products. Laboratory tests have even ascertained that some of the samples of milk and samples of milk product are unsafe under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
Adulteration of milk reduces the quality of milk and can even make it hazardous.
According to statistics available with The Sentinel, from April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2018 the laboratory tested 50 samples of milks. Of them, as many as 16 milk samples were found substandard. During the same period, the laboratory tested 29 milk product samples and found two of the samples substandard.
From April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019, the laboratory tested 69 milk samples and 16 of them were found substandard, one sample unsafe and one sample as misbranded. During the same period, 35 samples of milk products were tested, 13 of them were found to be substandard ones and three other samples were misbranded.
