GUWAHATI: A three-day 'Samriddhi Mela', organized at the Dighalipukhuri Park here by the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC on the occasion of International Women's Day, got underway on Tuesday.

The event is being held under the aegis of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana - National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-NULM) City Mission Management Unit of the GMC.

Women from various places in and around Guwahati thronged the Mela, which is showcasing traditional handloom and handicraft items, decorative pieces, jewellery etc.

Those who gathered on the occasion welcomed the GMC's initiative in hosting this event and said that such programmes for women should not restricted to International Women's Day, but held periodically as a matter of routine.

According to GMC sources, the main objective of the 'Samriddhi Mela' is to celebrate women empowerment through various initiatives related to sustainable social and economic uplift of women members of Self Help Groups (SHGs) under DAY-NULM, GMC.
