Guwahati: People of Guwahati city be careful about your garbage disposal habits. The Guwahati Municipal Corporation has decided to impose a fine of Rs 5000 each time you are caught littering the city streets.

The Corporation took to their social media platform saying that it has been the Corporation's endeavor to keep the city clean and in a bid to ensure that its efforts are not defeated, it has decided to impose the penalty on all those people who dump their garbage on the streets.

GMC has posted phone numbers in its post and has requested Guwahatians to lodge their complaints or share information about people found dirtying the streets. The Corporation has sought peoples' help in keeping the city streets and drains garbage-free.

GMC Commissioners have been requesting city residents and business establishments not to throw garbage or polythene bags on the streets or the drains. This often results in clogging the drains and flooding of city roads as soon as there are rains.

While several citizens have welcomed the decision to impose a fine, some have pointed to the fact that municipal workers take many days to clear the garbage.
