Tinkering Labs in five government schools in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Five Tinkering Labs were inaugurated at a formal event held at Government Pandu Adarsha High School on Tuesday in the presence of Prof. Dr. Nani Gopal Mahanta, Adviser, Education, Government of Assam, as the Chief Guest. Besides Dr. Indranoshi Das, ACS, Joint Secretary to the Government of Assam, Department of School Education, and Officer on Special Duty, Samagra Shiksha Assam (SSA), principals, teachers, dignitaries, representatives from SBI Cards and Payments Services Limited, and officials from Sumangal Foundation were also present.

These tinkering labs are supported by the Sumangal Foundation with the aim to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds and inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing, rapid calculations, measurements, etc. In order to provide financial support, Sumangal Foundation raised funds from a donor organization, SBI Cards and Payment Services Limited, to establish these tinkering labs at five government schools, viz. Pandu Adarsha High School, Ambikagiri High School, Champawati Higher Secondary School, Sabitri Bharali High School, and Geetanagar High School.

The sole objective of setting up a tinkering lab is to create workspaces that are suitable for young minds to learn innovation skills, develop ideas via hands-on activities, and work and learn in a flexible environment. In addition to that, this project also aims to empower youth with the 21st century skills of creativity, innovation, critical thinking, design thinking, and social and cross-cultural collaboration.

The project is about the establishment and implementation of Tinkering Labs in five government schools for two academic years, with a dedicated technical trainer conducting training for teachers and students and making it operationalized and sustainable under the guidance of the Sumangal Foundation.
