GUWAHATI: Civic life is bound to be horrible in Guwahati where even the orders of the Gauhati High Court go for a toss.

Here is a case study. Hearing a PIL (72/2016) filed on traffic congestion in the metropolitan city, a division bench of the Gauhati High Court comprising Chief Justice Ajai Lamba and Justice Soumitra Saikia issued its orders on January 7, 2020.

In its order the bench said, "It has been noticed that buses stop at Jalukbari Rotary Point, although there is no bus stop at the point. We, hereby, direct all concerned agencies to ensure that buses do not stop at Jalukbari Rotary Point."

In the other directive at the hearing, the bench said, "Food vendors from the area shall also be removed. In this regard we direct the Commissioner and Secretary, Public Work Department and the Commissioner of GMC to take necessary action."

However, these two directives of the High Court have really gone for a toss. Even now buses of all hues stop at the Jalukbari Point where there is no bus stop. Such a blatant violation of the order of the High Court is taking place under the very nose of traffic police personnel on duty there.

Jalukbari Rotary Point has also been turned into a 'vending zone' for a whole lot of food vendors who sell foods there regularly, leading to traffic and other forms of congestions in the area. It's a common scene that when police personnel go to the area the vendors flee the site immediately only to return to continue their business when the policemen are away.
