GUWAHATI: In order to ensure road safety, the transport department has decided to take some drastic steps, and from now on, the aim will be Mission Safe Travel and not taking fines. People violating traffic norms may now be arrested at any place or any time, and they can even be jailed. The Assistant Commissioner of Transport, Gautam Das, announced that this step has been taken following the instructions of the chief minister as he carried out a checking operation in Khanapara, Guwahati.
It is important to note that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma instructed all the concerned departments to take appropriate actions regarding the prevention of road accidents. He also instructed the departments to take strict action against all violators, so the transport department flagged off Mission Safe Travel in Guwahati on Saturday. Speaking on the occasion, Gautam Das mentioned that the number of incidents on the roads has decreased in recent times, and out of a total of 305 deaths in the month of May, only 25 are from the city. He also said that the officials of his department are more alert than before in order to prevent any untoward incidents.
Issuing strict warnings regarding adherence to traffic rules, the officer also said that in order to ensure road safety, strict checking will be carried out on all types of vehicles plying in the city and reminded that no one should engage in driving after drinking. He also mentioned that people should wear their seatbelts or helmets while driving and that commercial vehicles should not carry more people or goods than their limit. He also mentioned that vehicles from neighbouring states often ignore the road tax and fail to follow the rules set in the state, adding that soon action will be taken against all violators and all vehicles plying on the roads of the state will have to adhere to the regulations of the land.
Taking part in the operation, the district transport officer, Himangshu Kumar Das, mentioned that several vehicles have been confiscated since the beginning of the year for different violations. He also requested that everyone keep all their documents up-to-date to avoid the seizure of their vehicles or any other inconvenience.
