GUWAHATI: Apart from spiritual activities, Sri Sri Ugratara Devalaya Bordeuri Samaj is also engaged in conservation activity in one of the two ponds it has under its disposal. Together with Help Earth, an NGO, the devalaya has engaged itself in getting turtle eggs hatched.

The NGO took 35 black softshell tortoise eggs and got 34 of them hatched in the State Zoo. The NGO released all the 34 hatchlings at the pond on the premises of the devalaya on Sunday. After a few days, all the 34 turtle hatchlings will be released in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kailash Sarma, a member of the managing committee of the Devalaya, said: “The government handed over one of the two ponds on the temple premises to the GMC. The pond is lying idle. It should be given back to the devalaya for better upkeep.”
