GUWAHATI: Veteran journalist and chairman of the media department of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, Manjit Mahanta passed away in the early hours of Monday in Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. He had started his journalism career with Ajir Axom, the Assamese daily from the Sentinel group and later served as the executive editor. Afterwards, he decided to get into politics and contested in the elections for the Dispur constituency on a Congress party ticket in 2021. He also became the chairman of the media committee of APCC.

The mortal remains of Manjit Mahanta were taken to his residence for people to pay their homage. Journalists of the city also paid their homage at the Guwahati Press Club. His last rites will be conducted at the Nabagraha crematorium, according to sources.

Expressing his sadness, Housing & Urban Affairs and Irrigation Minister Ashok Singhal said, “I am deeply saddened by the sudden demise of senior journalist and politician, Manjit Mahanta. May his soul find peace. Om Shanti.” Minister of Public Health Engineering, Skill Development Employment & Entrepreneurship and Tourism also took to Twitter to offer his homage for the departed and condolences to the family members.
