GUWAHATI: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Cell arrested three government officials on alleged bribery charges in two separate operations.
According to sources, in the first operation, a trap was laid by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption cell in the office of the Block Development Officer, Chamaria Development Block, in Kamrup District, where two officials were caught red-handed accepting a bribe. The officials were identified as Dipta Kantha Chamuah, Block Development Officer of Chamaria Development Block, and Bhaskarjyoti Dutta, computer assistant of the same office. Both were apprehended for demanding a bribe of Rs 61,000 from the complainant.
Dipta Kanthal Chamuah was caught red-handed at his office chambers after he accepted Rs 8,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant. The tainted bribe money has been recovered from his possession and seized accordingly, in the presence of independent witnesses. Bhaskarjyoti Dutta, the computer assistant of the office, was also apprehended for conspiring in the bribery case. In this connection, a case (07/2023) under Section 120(B) IPC, read with Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018), has been registered in the ACB Police Station.
In another operation, another official was caught red-handed accepting a bribe for the complainant’s mutation-related work. The official is identified as Lat Mandal Rajiv Saikia of the Circle Office, Bihpuria Revenue Circle, in the Lakhimpur district. He was caught red-handed while accepting Rs. 6,000 from the complainant.
Lat Mandal Rajiv Saikia had demanded Rs. 12,000 as a bribe from the complainant for mutation-related works. Later on, he reduced the amount of the bribe to Rs. 9,000. Dibyajyoti Deuri, a middleman, was caught in a paan shop near the office in the presence of independent witnesses, immediately after he accepted Rs. 6,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant on behalf of and in conspiracy with the Lat Mandal Rajiv Saikia.
In this connection, a case (8/2024) under Section 120(B) IPC, RW Sec 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) has been registered in the ACB Police Station.
