We don't support Sherman Ali's actions: Debabrata Saikia

Saikia reassures Burha Xatradhikar

GUWAHATI: Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia assured Burha Xatradikar of Barpeta Xatra Basistha Dev Sarma that the Congress party does not support Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed in the matter of encroachment of xatra land. It may be recalled that the Burha Xatradhikar and some other members of the management committee of Barpeta Xatra had lodged an FIR against Sherman Ali Ahmed on the charge that the Baghbor MLA was instigating encroachment of land belonging to the xatra.

In a letter to the Burha Xatradhikar, Saikia wrote: "I am extremely grieved that you had to approach the police for safeguarding xatra land. Neither I nor my party support the latest acts of the Baghbor constituency at a time when the State Government is taking steps to evict encroachers from the historic Barpeta Xatra." The Leader of the Opposition said that the Swargadeos and kings of yore had donated land to the xatras and other religious institutions so that these could create a healthy society by spreading the message of peace.

As such, Saikia asserted, it is essential that the religious institutions should have absolute control over such donated land. However, over the years allegations have surfaced about encroachment upon land belonging to various xatras.

He said that if some people are encroaching upon xatra land then it is the Government's duty to evict them and re-settle them elsewhere.
