GUWAHATI: Director of the B Barooah Cancer Institute Dr AC Kataki has informed that "as per Globocan reports, the cancer burden has risen to about 1.93 crore in 2020. According to International Agency for Research on Cancer estimates that globally 1 in 5 people will develop cancer in their lifetime which is really alarming."
According to a press release, Dr Kataki made this observation at a webinar on 'Closing the Gap - Towards Better Cancer Prevention and Control', which was jointly organized on Friday by the Department of Preventive Onchology, Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute and Consumers' Legal Protection Forum, Assam to mark the occasion of World Cancer Day. In his welcome address, Dr Kataki laid emphasis on the role of NGOs and civil society in cancer prevention and control.
Dr Debabrata Barman, Professor and Head, Department of GynaeOncology, B.Borooah Cancer Institute, spoke about the cancer burden and an overview of cancer. Dr Arundhati Deka, State Nodal Officer, National Tobacco Control Cell, Assam vividly described the role of NGOs and civil society organisations in cancer and tobacco control. Ashim Sanyal, COO, Consumer Voice, New Delhi give a detailed description about the economic burden of cancer.
According to another press release, JCI Guwahati Achievers also organised a cancer awareness programme called 'Close the Gap' in collaboration with Midland Hospital and Oriental Cancer Institute.
