GUWAHATI: Do boards erected by Guwahati Traffic Police (GTP) have any takers among vehicle drivers? Such a question arises as there are many GTP boards within its jurisdiction spelling out traffic instructions that have no takers.
Take Dharapur Chariali as a case study. There’s a board erected by GTP. The board reads ‘no parking, 50 mtrs, violation of u/s 179(1) MV Act, Fine Rs 500’.
Barely 100 metres away from the Chariali there is a manned traffic point. However, traffic personnel under Azara Police Station traffic branch manning the traffic point never feel like keeping an eye on the illegal parking of vehicles of all hues at the Chariali. Vehicle drivers defy what is written on the board.
Dharapur Chariali is a busy point in the locality because of daily markets, schools, a college, banks etc located there. However, illegal parking of vehicles at the Chariali, often on the Old AT Road, leads traffic jam in the area.
Old AT Road is a busy road. It leads one to Uparhali or Mirza via Palasbari. Through this road, one can also go to Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport via Garal. All these make the Dharapur Chariali a busy centre where such illegal parking of vehicles may lead to unwanted incidents. Oddly enough, all these happen in front of the traffic police through blatant violation of what is written on the GTP ‘board’ that looks like a ‘scarecrow’ being used by farmers to scare away birds that feed on their orchards or paddy cultivation.
