GUWAHATI: The AJP (Asom Jatiya Parishad) has questioned who the actual Chief Minister of the State is?

The AJP's statement was made in response to the remarks made by a Minister that the recommendations submitted by the Clause VI high-level committee to provide Constitutional safeguard to Assamese community are 'far from legal reality'.

The newly-formed party has alleged that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is failing to understand the report submitted by the high-level committee. Thus, he has asked the Minister to make such remarks on behalf of him, the party stated.

In a statement, AJP general secretary Jagdish Bhuyan said, "The Clause VI of the Assam Accord is meant to provide Constitutional, Legislative and Administrative safeguards to the Assamese community. The Centre formed a 14-member high-level committee to submit a report to provide the safeguards. The high-level committee has three judges. It is headed by retired judge of Gauhati High Court Biplab Kumar Sarma. Other two members are, Arunachal Pradesh Advocate General Niloy Kumar Dutta and Assam government's Advocate General Ramesh Chandra Borpatra Gohain. The government has stated that submitted recommendations are illegal and cannot be implement. Is the State government trying to hint that these three judges don't know the law?"

Further, Bhuyan underlined that Sonowal should apologize to the people for 'insulting' the judges.

"The Sonowal-led government is hinting that the recommendations don't fall under the authority of the government. This is a wrong conception and it is the Assam government's legislative responsibility to implement the recommendations," Bhuyan stressed.

Citing the high-level committee's report, Bhuyan pointed out that it includes recommendations to protect the State's land, reserve jobs in government and non-government sectors for Assam youths, preserve indigenous language and literature, safeguard the State's people in the Assam Assembly, parliament and other Constitutional structures.

"The report also includes recommendations to provide safeguard to the people by amending the Constitution. These issues fall under the State government's authority and Dispur should act on its roles and responsibilities," Bhuyan added.
