GUWAHATI: The concern of the Gauhati High Court over traffic congestion in Guwahati got its reflection in its directive asking the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner as to why land had not been handed over to the PWD (Public Works Department) for the construction of lay bays (lay-bys). The High Court also asked the Deputy Commissioner on his alleged noncooperation to the PWD on this matter.
During the recent hearing of the PIL 72/2016 filed by Rita Das Mazumdar on traffic congestion in Guwahati, the counsel of the petitioner informed the High Court that some land had to be handed over to the PWD for the construction of lay bays (lay-bys). "In the perception of the learned counsel for the petitioner, the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) has not been cooperating and therefore no progress in this regard has been made," the order said, and added, "We hereby inform the Deputy Commissioner to apprise the Court as regards the reasons why the land has not been handed over to the PWD and required cooperation, as alleged is not being given." The PIL has been listed for its next hearing on August 31, 2020.
