GUWAHATI: Viable steps will be taken to solve the age-old issues of the masses, said candidate of Congress for Guwahati East Constituency, Ashima Bordoloi while addressing the media here on Sunday. She added, "Despite being the representative of this Constituency and also Cabinet Minister for the last five years, Siddhartha Bhattacharya totally failed to live up to the expectations of the masses here. He did not take any practical steps to tackle any of the myriad problems that the citizens are facing in and around the 'Gateway to the Northeast' — Guwahati."

Elaborating on the issues, Ashima said, "Stress will be laid on making tapped water accessible to each household, improve the lanes and road and also the drainage system besides tackling the menace of artificial floods. Another area of concern that cries for early solution is the insecurity being faced by the girls and women."

She added, "It is strange that the present legislator of the Constituency failed to make any commendable headway in taking taped water to the households. This is especially worrisome because during the last five years, he was also the Minister of GDD (Guwahati Development Department).

"This scheme started during the time when our party was in power. In East Guwahati, most of the work related to the JICA water-supply project was completed during our time. However, Bhattacharya failed to make the scheme functional during the last five years."

On the flash floods, Ashima Bordoloi stated, "The monsoon will soon arrive. But, no step has been initiated till date to scientifically clear the drains and major water outlets. The Bharalu River must be dredged much before the monsoon season. In fact, it should be a year-long process to clear the clogged outlets. Why can't we initiate steps for beautification of its banks? I will start this process."

She added, "I shall also provide pattas to the landless people who have been dwelling on the 11 hills in East Guwahati Constituency for the last 30 to 35 years. However, such land must not be in the Forest areas and in the notified danger zones."
