Workshop on Traditional Mask Making at Cotton University, Guwahati

GUWAHATI: A summer workshop on traditional mask making is going on at Cotton University from July 15 to July 22. Thirty-six participants, including PhD scholars and students from different departments of Cotton University, are taking part in the workshop, which is organized by the Department of Assamese.

Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee and internationally acclaimed mask artist Hemchandra Goswami, along with his student Ananta Kalita, are taking part in the workshop as resource persons. Speaking to The Sentinel Goswami said, “It’s appreciable that the Department of Assamese, Cotton University is taking such an initiative to introduce the traditional art to the youth generation. I am glad to receive immense interest and support from the young generation. We’ll look forward for more such initiatives”.

“I’ve some planning to introduce this art form to a larger mass; we will go by ourselves to the people so that the art form introduced by Srimanta Shankardeva can be established at international platform. I’m sure it will definitely be able to provide the two square meals a day, besides other basic necessities of a-third of the population of the State,” said Goswami. A participant, who is a student of Cotton University, Biplob Jyoti Saikia said, “The workshop is basically aimed at establishing the craft art form of Majuli at a larger platform.”
