GUWAHATI: 'World Earth Day' was celebrated by the Gauhati University NSS Cell on Friday through a webinar on the topic 'Global Challenges of Climate Change', stated a press release.
Inaugurating the programme, Prof. Hari Prasad Sarma, former Rector and retired Head of the Department of Environmental Science, GU said that new techniques have to be developed to face the Global Challenges of Climate Change and the environment has to be protected at any cost.
Dr Ranjan Kumar Kakati, Director of Students' Welfare & Programme Coordinator, NSS Cell, Gauhati University, welcomed the guests and participants and urged the students to save trees, protect them, plant maximum number of plants and to safeguard flora and fauna. He also said that taking corrective measures is the only way forward to protect the Earth.
Attending as the Resource Person, Prof Devesh Walia, Professor of the Department of Environmental Studies and Head of the Department of Geology, NEHU, Shillong, delivered a talk on Global Challenges of Climate Change and shared his views on the issues ailing the Environment and also laid emphasis on the corrective measures that are to be taken to face Global Challenges of Climate Change. Dr Rituparna Borah, NSS Programme Officer, GU Campus NSS Unit, delivered the vote of thanks.
About 100 NSS Programme Officers and NSS volunteers attended the webinar. To mark the occasion, NSS volunteers and Programme Officers planted hundreds of saplings in their respective places.
