GUWAHATI: World Intellectual Property Day was observed in Gauhati University on Tuesday.
World Intellectual Property Day is observed annually on April 26. The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe". April 26 was chosen as the date for World Intellectual Property Day because it coincides with the date on which the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization entered into force in 1970.
This year, the World IP Day theme is 'IP and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future'. The programme held at Gauhati University was streamed live. This year, the state inventors who had received patent grant in the year 2021-22 with the support of PIC-ASTEC, were felicitated to recognize their innovative work and contribution to the society and also to showcase their achievement in the common platform.
The patentees who were felicitated are Dharmananda Bormudoi, Manoj Kr. Das, Bornali Phukan, Deba Prasad Hazarika and Ranjit Chetia. The programme was presided over by the Vice-Chancellor of Gauhati University, Prof PJ Handique as the chief guest and Kimnei Changsan, Director-ASTEC, as the guest of honour along with the other dignitaries.
The event also marked the end of the ongoing national-level Faculty Development Programme on 'Intellectual Property Rights and Entrepreneurship Development' organized by the GUIPR-Cell and IQAC of Gauhati University in collaboration with PIC-ASTEC since April 20.
