‘World Patient Safety Day’ observed at Ayursundra Super Specialty Hospital in Guwahati

Guwahati: Ayursundra Superspecialty Hospital, Guwahati recently observed the ‘World Patient Safety Day’ at the hospital premises. The meeting began with the inaugural address by Dr. Mohammed Naseem (C.E.O, Ayursundra Superspecialty Hospital) who delivered the inaugural address and spoke about raising awareness about the safety of the patient.

Dr Naseem deliberated that patient safety is a global public health concern and is a fundamental principle of health care.

Dr. Vanadana Sinha, Medical Director of Ayursundra Superspecialty Hospital said “Hospital is a place which provides treatment to sick people round the clock. However, at times, it could turn out to be life threatening as well. Every process of patient care safety involves a certain degree of uncertainty. The discipline of patient safety highlights the importance to prevent harm to patients, caused by the process of healthcare itself. Improving patient safety means reducing harm to the patient.”

During the course of the meeting, Dr.Vandana Sinha pointed out that according to WHO, estimates show that in developing countries as many as 1 in 10 patients are harmed while receiving hospital care. During the discussion, it was also found that patient’s safety could be compromised by a range of errors or adverse events which include diagnostic errors, medication errors, health care acquired infections which occur during patient’s hospitalization etc.

Dr. Prasanta Gogoi, Head OT & Anaesthesist gave a detailed overview of the safety procedures and protocols that all personnel follow in the operation theater which include sanitisation, OT atmospheric control, proper discharge of bio medical waste etc in accordance with WHO guidelines.

Dr. Siddharth Goswami spoke as to how to improve patient safety and pointed out that the practice of proper communication (between hospital workers as well as between the patient and doctors), training of healthcare professionals and team building activities from time to time helps in trust building and can help in reducing such errors and avoid cases of medical negligence.

The meeting was concluded by the closing address of Dr. Mohammed Naseem, followed by a vote of thanks. The meeting was attended by all the doctors and nursing staff of the hospital to raise awareness about the same and also as a part of internal communications exercise.

World Patient Safety day is celebrated every year on 9^th of December to raise awareness about the safety of the patient. The main aim of this day is to raise awareness about patient safety issues in all parts of the world.
