GUWAHATI: Prompt action by security personnel averted a Dispur gherao programme taken up by the Assam Pradesh Youth Congress (APYC) in Guwahati on Saturday.
In protest against the SI recruitment examination scam in the State, the APYC staged the Dispur gherao agitation raising the demand for the resignation of the Chief Minister and an inquiry into the scam by a sitting judge of the Gauhati High Court.
The protestors got into a huddle at Manabendra Sarma Complex at Dispur where a protest meeting was held. MP Gaurav Gogoi, MLAs Rakibul Hussain and Rekibuddin Ahmed spoke at the protest meeting. The Congress leaders demanded resignation of the Chief Minister for the scam in the Home department held by none other than the Chief Minister.
They alleged that this 'corrupt government' could not hold a single recruitment examination smoothly.
Meanwhile, security personnel rushed to the spot and barricaded the protestors. After the protest meeting when the AYPC members were trying to go out, the police prevented them from going ahead, and that led to a scuffle. When the situation was going out of control the police had to arrest the agitators, including MP Gaurav Gogoi and MLAs Rakibul Hussain and Rekibuddin Ahmed.
