GUWAHATI: In a bid to reduce the amount of garbage generated post-Diwali, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has appealed to the citizens of Guwahati to properly dispose of the banana trees used for decoration. They have also issued a helpline number for the same goal. The stems of banana trees are extensively used for decorative purposes during the festival of lights. A large number of people use the same to light earthen lamps at their residences or business houses. But after the festival is over, these are carelessly dumped on the road, causing pollution, decay, and other problems for the people.

In this regard, the GMC has advised shopkeepers, puja pandal committees, and general citizens not to toss banana trees on the streets. They have issued a helpline number, 8811007000, for the citizens to call for the disposal of the same. They also mentioned that the collected trees will be recycled properly.

GMC, on its official X handle, mentioned, "Don't toss the banana trees on the streets. Call GMC at our helpline number, and we'll pick them up! Whether they're unsold or used, we'll ensure proper disposal. Let's light up the city without littering it. Together, we can make a difference!"
