Assam: Silchar- Based Journalist Beaten Up By Home Guards at SMCH

SILCHAR : Silchar based journalist, Biswa Kalyan Purkayustha was allegedly beaten up by the security personnel of Silchar Medical College and Hospital. The incident took place on Saturday night, when the journalist went to deliver food for his sister-in-law who was admitted in the SMCH.

According to Purkayustha, the guards standing outside the hospital misbehaved with him at first, and later on one of them started battering him with a stick. Purkayustha tried to explain and make them understand, but the security personnel did not stop. Later that night, when the journalist went to the Silchar Civil Hospital for a medical checkup, the doctors found severe bruises and marks on his body. He had a conversation regarding the incident with the SMCH principal, Dr. Babul Kumar Bezbaruah, who suggested him to register an FIR immediately.

On Sunday, Purkayustha lodged an FIR against the guards at Silchar Sadar Police Station. The police immediately took the case into consideration. According to the reports, the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Cachar District, Numal Mahattahad rushed to the Silchar Civil Hospital to meet the journalist on Saturday, after they getting the news.

The SP stated that, the Chief Minister has directed for proper security to the journalists in the state. He assured that incidents like this won't occur in the future. ''The accused home guard has been identified as S Deb, and is detained and suspended from his post. Necessary and legal actions will be taken by the authority against the accused the police officials who are familiar with the matter stated this.

Condemning the attack, president of Silchar Press Club said that similar incidents have taken place in the past, and they won't tolerate anymore attacks on journalists further. Recently, a doctor allegedly kicked a pregnant lady in the SMCH, and was attacked by her family members later. According to sources Dr. Babul Kumar Bezbaruah said that they are ashamed of the recent incidents taking place in SMCH, all their efforts are going in vain.
