Unprecedented response

On 19th March, entire Guwahati came to a standstill as Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma filed his nominations for the Assembly elections. I have been following elections, be them Assembly or Parliamentary, for the last 35 years in Assam, but never saw such an unprecedented and spontaneous response to any leader. One can love Himanta Biswa Sarma or hate him but he cannot be ignored in the State's politics. His supporters flocked the city to wish him good luck from each corner of the State. The entire 5-km stretch from Sonaram Field to DC office at Kachari was full on both sides of the road. It gave a feeling of the Vijayadashsmi. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma is loved and respected by millions. May God give him more energy and capacity to fulfil the demands and wishes of the people of Assam.

PM's speech at Karimganj

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed an election meeting at Bhatgram in Karimganj district, Assam on March 18, 2021. He asked the people to vote in favour of BJP candidates in the Assembly election in the State, but he did not say anything on the revival of the two closed paper mills – Nagaon and Cachar paper mills. The people of Assam want to know the view of the Prime Minister regarding the revival of the two paper mills. The employees of both the paper mills have been deprived of their salaries for the last four years. For the interest of the employees, the BJP government should revive both the paper mills.

True colours

This letter has a reference to my earlier letter under the caption 'Dr Jekyll and Hyde' which was published in letters to The Editor column of your esteemed daily sometime back. Akhil Gogoi, a self-styled peasant leader, president of the KMSS and also of the unregistered regional political party named Raijor Dal, has ultimately showed his true colours. His open letter to the Congress from the GMCH bed caught his mentor Dr. Hiren Gohain on wrong foot and ultimately it forced Dr. Gohain to resign from Raijor Dal where he was the chief advisor. His latest move to withdraw his candidature from Mariani constituency has exposed his nexus with the Congress whom he had castigated earlier.

Are they competent?

Nomination papers of a few AJP candidates were rejected due to some technicalities. When nomination papers of candidates are rejected by the Election Commission it reflects the competency of the party. If the AJP cannot file the nomination papers of the candidates correctly how can we the electorates have confidence on that party to run the government. Running a government and waving black flags, calling bandhs, shouting slogans on the streets are not the same business. Running a government or administration requires competent leaders. Are they?

Bank strike

The bank strike seems to have become normal and that too for two days succeeding two bank holidays. The employees, of course, would lose two days' salary. However, the poor customers who have no access to e-banking would get affected as they don't even know how to use the debit card. The government and management are not taking the strike seriously, but the customers are punished. If yearly bank strike is turning normal, why not the management and unions come to an understanding on dates as to when they want to go on strike so that those days can be added to the yearly list of bank holidays. It would help the customers to plan bank works accordingly.

Positive attitude reduces amnesia

As we get older, memory loss is a natural process. We can reduce the amount of memory loss (Amnesia), even if we spend most of our lives laughing and cheering. A study by psychologists on positive affects and memory was recently published in the journal Psychological Science. A team of researchers conducted three periodic studies on 991 adults and older people in the United States. Three of those periods were 1995 and 1996, 2004 and 2006, and 2013 and 2014. Participants in each of the studies were asked to report positive emotional experiences over the past 30 days. The last two extends were studied to test their memory. During the test, they were allowed to respond immediately to the words they said and were allowed to repeat them after 15 minutes.

The researchers looked at participants' age, gender, education, depression, negative effects, and extroversion in their study of positive effects and memory impairment. Claudia Haase, a professor at Northwestern University and senior author of the research paper, says that although memory decreases with age, the positive effects of high levels of memory directly reduce the rate of memory loss within a decade.

In the future, there will be more research on the effects of memory loss on human health, social relationships, and its positive effects.

Judgmental world

In this world, no one is perfect. Everyone has their own personality which makes them different from others. Putting a point of view about someone and giving someone suggestion is nice but judging somebody according to their looks and lifestyle is wrong which we all are doing.

We live in a country where people judge each other in every footstep. Judging somebody is very easy but understanding someone's position is very difficult. People judge others very quickly and very easily tease them for their weak points. Commenting on somebody may not be a big deal but it definitely affects that person. It can destroy their mental peace, reduce their self confidence and also causes depression. No matter how you are and where you are, people always judge and someone will be definitely unhappy about who you are and where you are. Some people can easily handle the judgmental world by ignoring or replying. But not every person can handle these kinds of things.

People do not accept who they are, no matter how good they are at their own place, they always try to copy others and because of that their real personalities don't shine. If people try to accept their surroundings and do not judge anyone then that will be a great thing.

Craze for gaming

Craze for gaming is increasing day-by-day among youths, especially mobile games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Call of Duty Mobile etc. These games are so addictive and harmful to youths that it leads to mental health as well as physical health issues. In September 2020, PUBG Mobile was banned in India by the government. However, people can continue to play PUBG Mobile Korean version and the other mobile games which are still available in Google Play Store for free. In this scenario, some so-called digital influencers or streamers are continuously influencing people to play these games. This should be stopped. It will be helpful for the youngsters if the government takes some necessary steps regarding it.
