Letters to the Editor: City bus fare in Guwahati

To the best of my knowledge, the base fare for city buses was fixed as Rs 7 by the transport authority. Ironically, the bus operators are charging higher rates, i.e. Rs 10 as minimum base fare and subsequently charging by rounding off to the next Rs 10. The buses are neither displaying fare charts, nor giving tickets to commuters. Hence, it is requested to start a massive drive by enforcement agencies against these malpractices.

Vishy: A connoisseur's delight

Gundappa Viswanath's autobiography Wrist Assured, launched a couple of days ago, should rekindle memories of the gifted and stylish right-hander's glorious days of cricket. Vishy, as he is popularly known, was a connoisseur's delight. He raised his degree of batting excellence when others failed. He added plenty of colours to Indian batting with his repertoire of strokes around the wicket. Short in height but not in stature, one cannot visualize the Karnataka star without his trademark square-cut that would often whizz past the gully and point regions, leaving the fielders in awe and admiration. Among Vishy's many great knocks, his 97 not out against the West Indies at Chepauk in 1975 was easily the best as it defined his granite resolve in a crisis situation. It was a master-class knock scored against crushing odds and the fury of Andy Roberts, that eventually helped India win the Test. Later, the innings was best described by Sunil Gavaskar in his book, Idols: "His 97 not out is the finest Test match innings I was privileged to see."
