Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced today that five independent colleges in the state will be accorded university status in the next two years, including two in Lakhimpur, Nagaon, as well as JB College in Jorhat, Sibsagar College in Sibsagar, and Handique College in Guwahati.

The Chief Minister spoke in the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) auditorium at the North East Education Conclave.

The occasion was also attended by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. In his address, Mr Sarma stated, "We have already chosen that our independent institutions of Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Jorhat (JB College), together with Sibsagar college and Handique college, will be accorded the status of university in the next two years..."

According to the minister, Assam has made success in achieving the National Education Policy (NEP). The state government has established a high-level council for the education policies implementation, the draught execution policy is available, and the Rajya Shiksha Ayog is ready.

"We're moving forward with the implementation...we've prepared a strategy for online teacher transfer and recruiting and selection is on track." Only if the state government is unable to do so on its own, do we seek assistance and advice from the federal government. Mr Sarma stated, "I am certain that advice will come to us immediately, and I am extremely confident about that."
