PIL Filed in Delhi High Court Against Om Raut's film Adipurush for Hurting Sentiments

Adipurush, directed by Om Raut and starring Prabhas and Kriti Sanon, has been accused of hurting the feelings of the Hindu community in a complaint filed with the Delhi High Court.

NEW DELHI: Adipurush, directed by Om Raut and starring Prabhas, Saif Ali Khan, and Kriti Sanon, has encountered problems just hours after it released in theatres. Hindu Sena National President Vishnu Gupta filed a PIL against the film, claiming that it made fun of Hindu deities, the Ramayana, and Hindu culture.

According to a report, the petition asks for instructions to have the offensive images of the Hindu deities Ram, Ravana, Sita, and Hanuman removed. It was said that the way these deities are portrayed in the movie is inaccurate, improper, and at odds with how religious figures are portrayed in the Ramayana.

Adipurush features Lord Ravana, played by actor Saif Ali Khan. The character's beard has also drawn criticism for the plea. It claims that because he is seen making a "ghastly" grimace, the portrayal has offended Hindu sensibilities.

According to the PIL , “Characters are shown in a way that is at odds with how Hindu religious figures are described in the Ramayana by Maharishi Valmiki and the Ramcharitmanas by Saint Tulsidas. Ravana, a Hindu Brahmin, is depicted in an offensive pose while making a grotesque grimace, which is a grave insult to Hindu civilisation.”

Since the movie's teaser was released last year, Adipurush's rendition of the Ramayana has drawn a lot of criticism. The chief priest of the Ayodhya Ram Temple and Hindu organisations protested about how the epic figures were portrayed, but the film's producers insisted that they took care to avoid offending any religious sentiments. Before the film's premiere, there was a buzz about the director, Om Raut, asking theatre owners to worship Lord Hanuman by leaving a seat unfilled.

The film has also generated controversy in Nepal, as Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah has voiced his concern for wrong depiction of Sita. Sita is commonly known as the "daughter of Nepal," according to Balen Shah, who said that the movie refers to her as the "daughter of India."
