Doctor is a Tamil movie with full of entertainment directed by Nelson Dilipkumar starring actor Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role. It is an action thriller that has been released in theatres on 9 October and released on the OTT platform of Netflix during Diwali on 4 November. Following its OTT launch in Diwali, the movie is now all set to premiere on satellite television channel Sun TV.
The streaming of movies on OTT platforms has become common and an alternative option in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic but now filmmakers mainly from the south are looking for television premieres. Some of the movies that are released on satellite television over the past months are Madela, Sarbath, Tughlaq Darabar and Aelay.
The satellite releases are profitable as broadcasters are known to catch the attention of family audiences along with better festive advertisements. This technique works better for films with small budgets that earned many profits by selling on satellite platforms followed by online premiere unable to command the high rates that OTT platforms can easily pay as they compete for mainstream movies, big starts for direct online release.
For those movies with a bigger budget, mainly in Hindi languages, the streaming platform is ready to pay double the rates offered by television channels that can be up to Rupees 60-65 crore in most cases. This explains why mainstream movies would prefer to release movies on OTT platforms if filmmakers are unable to release films directly in theatres. The online streaming platforms are willing to stream ready films also those in regional languages. As during the COVID pandemic some of the small films might get stuck to release in theatres but might be ready with the film, those films have no other option than turning into emerging platforms but may not get the rates expected. In such a situation, a television premiere could be the best option as it will also lead the film reached to family audiences as well.
