Tamil movie Koozhangal directed by Debutant director PS Vinothraj has been selected as India's official entry to the 2022 Oscars. If Koozhangal (Pebbles) gets selected it will be completing for Best International Feature film for the Academy award 2022. Koozhangal is produced by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivam. The 94th Academy Award is going to take place in Los Angles with scheduled date as 27 March, 2022. And the nominations for the award are scheduled to announce on 8 February, 2022.
The story of the movie shows a husband addicted to alcohol and abuses his wife regularly. Because of his unbearable torture his wife finally runs away and after that he went out with his young son in search of his wife to bring her back home. The helpless child along with his alcoholic and violent father starts to search for his mother who run away to get rid of abuses. The cast of the movie includes Chellapandi and Karuththadaiyaan as newcomers.
The movie Koozhangal was chosen by as result of a unanimous decision after a long conversation. It was picked by committee of 15 members and renowned filmmaker Shaji N Karu along with Supran Sen, Secretary General and Film Federation of India as mentioned by PTI.
There were other 14 movies in competition which includes Hindi film Sardam Utham by Shoojit Sircar, Sherni acted by Vidya-Balan, Mandela a Tamil movie, Toofan by Farhan Akhtar, famous film Shershah which depicts the life of Vikram Batra and Godavari a Marathi movie. Koozhangal at the 50th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) in the year 2020 had also won the Tiger Award for best film.
Film maker and producer Vignesh Shivan expresses his happiness through his twitter handle. With hash tags of pebbles, Nayanthara, Rowdy pictures,etc. He wrote can't be more proud and happier and shared the news that Koozhangal will be representing the country in the best international feature category of Oscar. Vinothraj expresses his happiness through twitter on hearing the news and said he is grateful for all the love and support.
Other people from the film fraternity including filmmakers, directors and actors sent their best wishes and congratulated the team of Koozhanga for such a great success.
None of the Indian movies have ever won the international Oscar award. The movie Lagaan of 2001 by Ashutosh Gowariker featuring actor Aamir Khan was the last movie to go for the final stage in the best international feature category.
