MUMBAI: Pradeep Sarkar, the director of Mardaani (2014) and Parineeta (2005), passed away in Mumbai early on Friday. He was 68 years old and had been ill for some time. He passed away in a hospital, where he was rushed after his condition deteriorated at 2:30 am.

Today, funeral arrangements were made at the Santacruz crematorium in Mumbai. When the news of Sarkar's passing reached his fellow members of the film industry, they awoke to a sombre morning and were shocked by the premature passing of the director.

After a successful career crafting ads for products and services, Sarkar transitioned into directing at the age of 50. He received praise for his music videos for Ab Ke Saawan by Shubha Mudgal, Dhoom Pichak Dhoom by Euphoria, Maaeri, and Piya Basanti by Sultan Khan.

He had been working on his passion project, a Kangana Ranaut-starring biopic of the great stage performer Noti Binodini from the nineteenth century.

Parineeta, Sarkar's debut film as a director, drew on his Bengali roots. In her first Hindi-language feature, Vidya Balan appeared in the 2005 period drama, which was based on Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novella of the same name. Saif Ali Khan and Sanjay Dutt also appeared in the film.

Rekha was persuaded by Sarkar to take on the role of a nightclub dancer in the movie's top-charting song, Kaisi Paheli.

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag (2007), starring Rani Mukherji, Jaya Bachchan, Konkona Sen Sharma, and Abhishek Bachchan, was made as a result of the success of the tastefully produced movie.

In 2014, Sarkar and Mukherji collaborated once more on the police thriller Mardaani. Additionally, Deepika Padukone and Neil Nitin Mukesh's Lafangey Parindey (2010) and Helicopter Eela were both directed by Sarkar.

He was the director of four online series, including Duranga and Forbidden Love.
