GUWAHATI: A total of 208 of candidates are left in the fray in the forthcoming Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election, which will be held on April 22, after four nominations were rejected by the returning officer.

The scrutiny process was carried out on Friday at the Rabindra Bhawan here under the supervision of Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner Pallav Gopal Jha, who is also the District Election Officer, in the presence of Election Observers. After thorough scrutiny by the Assistant Election Officers and Executive Magistrates, 208 nominations were found to be valid.

The candidates whose nomination papers have been rejected are Pinki Borpujari (AJP) of ward No. 41, Kamakhya Pandey (RJD) of ward No. 44, Madhumita Chakravarty Jana (Independent) of Ward and Dipak Prasad (INC) of ward No. 16. Fifty per cent of GMC wards are reserved for women candidates this time.

There will be 780 polling booths where 7,97,807 voters will cast their votes. Among them, 397,128 are male, 4,00,654 are female and 26 are third-gender voters.

Polling will take place from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.

CONGRESS DEMAND: The Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), while opposing the State Election Commission's has decision to conduct the GMC election by using EVM machines, has demanded that since EVMs will be used hence VVPat system should be utilized during polling.
