GUWAHATI: The deadline for filing of nominations for the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) election ended on Wednesday, with a total of 212 candidates, including nominees of various political parties and Independent candidates, submitting their papers to contest in a total of 60 wards.
Nomination papers will be scrutinized on April 1 and the last date of withdrawal of candidature is April 4.
According to Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) sources, 59 nominees of the party have filed their nomination papers, while one seat has been ceded to an Independent candidate.
According to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources, 53 party candidates have filed their nomination papers for different wards.
Asom Gana Parishad sources said that their nominees have filed papers to contest in the seven wards allotted to it by alliance partner BJP.
Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) sources said that their candidates will contest in 26 wards.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sources said that 25 candidates have submitted papers to contest the election on the party ticket.
Festive scenes were witnessed at the Kamrup (M) Deputy Commissioner's office on Wednesday, with senior leaders and foot soldiers of various parties arriving there with processions, drummers, Bihu dancers etc., for filing of nomination papers.
The election will be held on April 19 and the results will be declared on April 21.
