GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have arrested as many as 223 persons across the State between January 9 and 8 am of January 16 for their involvement in illegal teer gambling.

According to police sources, an amount of Rs 5,03,876 has been recovered from the arrested persons.

The highest number of 30 arrests was made in Dhubri district during this period, followed by Biswanath with 22 arrests; Sonitpur with 21 arrests; Darrang with 18 arrests; Karimganj with 15 arrests; Guwahati city with 12 arrests; Kamrup, Bongaigaon and Morigaon with 11 arrests each; Barpeta with 10 arrests; Baksa with eight arrests; Udalguri with seven arrests; Cachar with six arrests; Hailakandi and Goalpara with five arrests each; Charaideo, South Salmara, Bajali and Lakhimpur with four arrests each; Dibrugarh, Karbi Anglong and Nalbari with three arrests each; Dhemaji and Chirang with two arrests each; and Golaghat and Jorhat with one arrests each.

On the other hand, the sources revealed that cash worth Rs 60,460 was recovered in Sonitpur; Rs 20,775 was recovered in Hailakandi; Rs 52,025 was recovered in Kamrup; Rs 7,850 was recovered in Dibrugarh; Rs 17,420 was recovered in South Salmara; Rs 130 was recovered in Chirang; Rs 32,200 was recovered in Darrang; Rs 7,050 was recovered in Biswanath; Rs 2,021 was recovered in Udalguri; Rs 900 was recovered in Dhubri; Rs 70,300 was recovered in Karimganj; Rs 5,950 was recovered in Bajali; Rs 790 was recovered in Jorhat; Rs 6,570 was recovered in Lakhimpur; Rs 11,760 was recovered in Cachar; Rs 29,043 was recovered in Baksa; Rs 44,770 was recovered in Guwahati; Rs 94,392 was recovered in Barpeta; Rs 19,580 was recovered in Bongaigaon; and Rs 19,890 was recovered in Kokrajhar.

It may be mentioned that four of the arrested persons have been picked up from Charaideo in the last 24 hours.
