GUWAHATI: As many as 36,000 primary schools in the state will return tablets given to them by the State Education Department for the implementation of the Shiksha Setu Programme to their respective Block Elementary Education Officers (BEEOs) at 2 p.m. on May 22.

The ASPTA (Assam State Primary Teachers’ Association) is not cooperating with the State Government in its Shiksha Setu Programme as the government has not yet met their demand for the creation of headmasters’ posts in the primary schools.

ASPTA’s secretary general, Ratul Chandra Goswami, said, "The association took the decision not to cooperate in the Shiksha Setu programme on May 2 until the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools. On May 8, the Education Department issued an order that, for the Shiksha Setu Programme, a training programme would be organized at block level. However, primary teachers in every education block have not participated for the past twenty days in support of the demand. The deadline set by us, May 21, expired today."

Goswami said, "The demand for the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools dates back to 1982, and the teachers have sat for talks with the government as many as forty times since then. The last discussion with the Education Minister was on December 21, 2022. Education Minister Ranoj Peju assured us of taking up the issue of the creation of headmasters’ posts in primary schools with the Finance Department to get approval. Five months have already elapsed, but again, nothing tangible came up. Tomorrow, we are going to return the tablets to the BEEOs."
