Government files affidavit on fake encounters

GUWAHATI: A total of 51 people have been killed and another 139 injured since May, 2021 to May, 2022, informed the Assam Government in its affidavit to the Gauhati High Court on the matter of PIL on fake encounters.
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) (86/2021) had been filed by Arif Md Yeasin Jwadder under Article 226 of the Constitution of India in Gauhati High Court to issue an appropriate writ or order or direction calling for the records on "fake encounter killings" by police personnel.
Jwadder has sought an order from the High Court for the registration of an FIR in the alleged fake encounter cases and an independent investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a Special Investigation Team (SIT) or a police team from another state, under the supervision of the court. He also sought a judicial inquiry by a sitting Judge of the Gauhati High Court into the alleged encounters and monetary compensation to the families of the victims after due verification. The next hearing in the case will be on July 29, 2022. Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia appeared for the State.
