8 held for bid to extort money from vendors in Guwahati

GUWAHATI: Eight people were arrested on Saturday on charges of extorting money from vendors at the weekly market at Dakhingaon in the Kahilipara area of the city.

They were arrested on the basis of a suo moto case (1172/2022) registered by the Dispur police

Police sources identified those arrested as Abdul Mannar, Uin Singh, Haneef Ali, Khalilullah, Ansarul Alam, Mehboob Sheikh, Mumtaj Alam and Diganta Teron.

The accused persons were produced in court on Saturday and sent to judicial custody.

The sources added that the market itself is illegal as it is being operated without permission of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC).
