Guwahati: An 8-year-old minor was allegedly raped by a 58-year-old man in the Rupohihat area of Assam's Nagaon district.
According to reports, Islam Uddin, the accused, has been named as the man who reportedly manipulated the girl into coming to his house and then raped her.
Locals later apprehended the suspect and handed him over to Rupohihat police.
Recently the North Lakhimpur Police has arrested Uddhab Bharali, an Assamese entrepreneur and Padma Shri laureate, for allegedly raping a minor girl who was in his foster care.
He was charged under the Protectia yearson of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act as well as several sections of the Indian Penal Code. On December 17, 2021, the police opened an investigation after receiving a complaint from a chief judicial magistrate who had been briefed by the District Legal Services Authority (DSLA).
In another incident from last month, a 50-year-old man was detained in Assam's Morigaon district for reportedly rapping three child girls aged 6-7 years.
Rajani Kanta Daimary, a native of Jengorbori village in the Laharighat police station in the central Assam state, was detained. According to reports, the accused allegedly raped three minor girls in his village, and a case was filed in this regard at the Laharighat police station.
According to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) numbers for 2020, Assam had the highest rate of crime against women in the country for the fourth year in a row, the rate of crime against women in Assam was 154.3 percent, far higher than the national rate of 56.5 percent.
