Arifa Choudhury, our mother, who was a leading advocate, social worker, and resident of Gog-Garoghuli of Gorchuk in Guwahati, left for her heavenly abode on October 30, 2023. The late Choudhury was born at Nalbari on February 16, 1958. She had her early education in Tezpur, as her father was serving in the Fisheries Department. Thereafter, she also studied at Nagaon and Nalbari as her father got transferred from place to place. She got married in 1980. After marriage, she did her Masters in 1986 and obtained her LLB degree in 1994. Thereafter, she joined the bar in 1994 and started practising with her husband at the Gauhati High Court. Over time, two of her sons also joined in practice with her. Late Choudhury was always in the forefront to protect the women who were victims of domestic violence or neglected by their husbands to pay maintenance. In the High Court, she was very cordial with the bar and the bench and used to encourage young women lawyers to work hard and to be sincere in their profession. Mrs. Choudhury was very helpful and kind-hearted and never hesitated to extend any help to the needy. As an advocate, her submission was lucid, precise, and to the point. She authored many articles that were published in the local Assamese daily. She was a lady with strict discipline and never compromised with injustice. Her sudden death news cast a pale of gloom amongst the legal fraternity, and her death was condoled widely. A large number of lawyers visited her house to pay their last homage. She was a voracious reader, having a rich library at home with a huge collection of books in different languages. She was a loving woman and a warm friend to many. Her presence was a source of comfort to everyone who knew her. With all her accomplishments, wisdom, and compassion, she will always remain in our hearts. Her death is a huge loss for the legal fraternity, which is not easy to fill. In connection with her Adya-Shraddha, we pay our homage to her departed soul.
