Guwahati: A year after the controversial
Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) was passed in Parliament despite widespread
protests across the Northeast, the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) observed 'Black Day' in Guwahati along with other parts of the region on
Friday.
Led by the North East Students' Organization (NESO), AASU members hoisted black
flags and displayed black banners at Shahid Bhawan in the city as a sign of protest against the draconian Act.
Speaking
to the media, AASU adviser Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya said, "Despite
the relentless opposition of the indigenous people of the region against the
Bill, the Centre passed the controversial legislation in Parliament on
December 11 last year. The Central government tried to divide the people of the
Northeast by saying that areas with internal line-covered areas would be exempted.
However, the people of the Northeast took a very firm stand against CAA and
called for a complete shutdown on December 10 last year. All the seven
states of the Northeast protested together against the contentious law. Today, Black Day has been observed across the region by displaying black flags and
black banners, which is a clear message to the Centre that we are against CAA."
On December 9, the NESO announced in a statement that it would observe December 11 as a 'Black Day' to mark its continued opposition to the Act. NESO comprises eight top student bodies of seven Northeast States -- the Khasi Students' Union (KSU), Garo Students' Union (GSU), All Assam Students' Union (AASU), All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU), Tripura Students' Federation (TSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Naga Students' Federation (NSF), and All Arunachal Pradesh Students' Union (AAPSU).
