GUWAHATI: The All Assam Electricity Consumer Association (AAECA) opposed the recent amendment by the Central government on electricity (rights of consumer) rules 2020 by introducing a Time of Day (ToD) tariff and simplification of smart meter rules.

According to the amendment, "the power tariff will be 20 per cent less during the solar hour and 10 to 20 per cent higher during the peak hours."

AAECA Coordinator Ajoy Archarya said, opposing the amendment, "Since everyone departs for work during the day to earn a living, the average person utilizes electricity primarily at night. Also, students, after they return from school, carry on their duties at night or in the evening. This will eventually lead to more tariffs during peak hours. This action is totally looting the general public. But more than the general public, it is the small industries that are most affected. They work the whole day and night, so if the tariff increases by night, they have to stop their night shift, which will eventually lead to the employment of those working during the night shift. The consumers will be pushed to the open market, and the regulatory authority with the government will not have any control."

The coordinator says they will continue their agitation until this matter is solved.
