Aaranyak’s Gift To Bengal Forest For Boosting Rhino Conservation

GUWAHATI: Aaranyak, a city-based NGO working for wildlife, has gifted eight motorcycles to the Bengal Forest Department (wildlife) to boost rhino conservation efforts in North Bengal.

The motorcycles were handed over by the principal chief conservator of forests and head of forest force, Bengal, S. Barari, to the respective forest divisions at Hollong forest rest house in Jaldapara National Park. Senior officials of the Bengal forest department, including chief wildlife warden R.K. Sinha were present.

Aaranyak’s secretary general Bibhab Kumar Talukdar, also the chair of the Asian Rhino Specialist Group of the IUCN and Asia Coordinator of International Rhino Foundation, also attended the function.

The motorcycles have been provided by Aaranyak with support from the Born Free Foundation and in association with Himalayan Nature and Adventure Foundation. Talukdar said the eight motorcycles, which are expected to boost the protection mechanism in the rhino habitats of north Bengal, are being distributed among four wildlife divisions of north Bengal — three for Jaldapara wildlife division, two for Gorumara wildlife division, two for Cooch Behar wildlife division and one for Jalpaiguri wildlife division. A statement released by Aaranyak said the forest department wants to spread out the rhino population in North Bengal to secure the future of the species.
