GUWAHATI: The Chandrapur unit of AASU (All Assam Students' Union) has demanded "immediate halt to the indiscriminate digging of agricultural land on the bed of the Brahmaputra River in Chandrapur Revenue Circle of Kamrup (Metro) district.

The students' body said that the local farmers of Panikhaiti and Hatisila areas have been earning their livelihood by farming in the fertile Brahmaputra riverside areas for decades. But, the indiscriminate digging of land in the area by some elements have posed a serious threat for the farmers. AASU general secretary (Kamrup Metro District) Tutumoni Kalita furter said, "The indiscriminate excavation of agricultural land on the Brahmaputra River has led to severe land erosion in the area. The erosion has caused damage to the agricultural land apart from posing a threat to the highway connecting Narengi to Chandrapur."

He alleged that some people recently started digging in a new area at Panikhaiti and Hatisila without consulting the local farmers.

Demanding an immediate halt to such ongoing activities in the area, the students' body also submitted memorandums to the Chief Minister, Water Resources Minister, Forest Minister and the Kamrup Metro Deputy Commissioner.
