GUWAHATI: After two successive years of nil and muted celebrations respectively due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the residents of Guwahati joined their brethren in other parts of the State in celebrating Rongali Bihu with zest and gaiety over the last three days. Huge crowds thronged various Bihu functions in the city till late in the night, enjoying performances of 'husori' and other cultural programmes.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, too, joined the merry-making and attended the function at the Latasil ground on Thursday.
On the other hand, the All Guwahati Students' Union (AGSU) organized a 'Mukoli Bihu' function at the Judges' Field here on Thursday to mark 'Goru Bihu'. The ceremonial flag was hoisted on the occasion by noted theatre activist Dasarath Das.
Several noted artistes, litterateurs, sportspersons and eminent personalities were felicitated by the chief advisor of All Assam Students' Union (AASU), Samujjal Bhattacharjya. Those felicitated included Gyanpith awardee Nilamoni Phukon, Padmashree Shakuntala Choudhury (felicitation accepted by families of both personalities), Dhaneswar Ingti, Anuradha Sarma Pujari, Chabilal Upadhyay, Dr Deva Kanta Ramchiary, Kameswar Brahma, Diganta Biswa Sarma, Ratneswar Narzary, Dr Mrinal Kalita, Gautam Daimary, Abhijeet Bora, Jintu Mohan Kalita and Lovlina Borgohain.
The Mukoli Bihu function witnessed performances of husori along with Koch-Rajbonghsi folk dance and Karbi folk dance. Artistes Tarali Sarma, Zublee Baruah, Sandhya Menon, Arundhuti Bezbaruah performed at the function. Students of Handique Girls' College also performed choral songs at the function.
