GUWAHATI: The leader of the Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia expressed grief on the demise of veteran Congress leader Ahmed Patel.

Saikia said itis a huge loss for the Indian National Congress and its workers.

"From 1970s onwards, Ahmed Patel ji worked with three generations of our party High Command. Late Madam Indira ji picked him up to contest the Lok Sabha election from Bharuch in 1977. Subsequently, he rendered yeoman service to the Congress party in various important capacities, including Treasurer of AICC, Parliamentary Secretary to Late Rajiv ji and Political Secretary to Madam Sonia ji. He was a down-to-earth, low-profile person who maintained cordial contact with Congress leaders and workers from all corners of India. We have been all left poorer by Ahmed Patel ji's passing," Saikia stated. "I pray for the eternal peace of his soul and extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and all Congress workers at this hour of grief," he added.

APCC (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee) president Ripun Bora said he was a key person of the Congress party. "He worked for a long time as the treasurer of the AICC. His demise is a loss not only to the Congress but to the national politics," said Bora.
