Congress MLA from Assam Ajanta Neog who represents the
Golaghat constituency is supposed to join the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead
of the Assembly elections which will be held in April of next year.
According to media reports she met Assam Chief MinisterSarbananda Sonowal where discussions were undertaken to switch party.
The senior Congress leader is likely to join the saffron party during Union Home minister Amit Shah's visit to the state on December 26.
However, the reason behind Neog's quitting the party is not revealed yet.
States Finance Minister and BJP mascot Himanta Biswa Sarma have also announced that several senior Congress leaders are likely to
switch party ahead of the upcoming election.
Neog was one of the most influential political figures
in Upper Assam. She first entered the assembly in the 2001 elections by
defeating her nearest rival by over 10,000 votes. She was again victorious in
the subsequent election held in 2006.
She won in the 2011 Assembly elections by a huge margin of 46171 votes. Consecutively she won the 2016 Assembly Elections.
Moreover, in July of this year rumors of Ajanta joining
the BJP was circulating in some sections of the media but the Congress leader
denied the reports stating that it was a conspiracy against her.
