GUWAHATI: Alcohol sales saw a spike in the city during the Diwali festival, with a staggering Rs 6.8 crore worth of the product being sold in just two days in the city.

According to the Excise Department, average sales of alcohol were recorded on both days of the festival. They pointed out that sales of alcohol worth Rs 3.71 crore were recorded on Sunday and Rs 3.11 crore on Monday. This is a major increase since the same festival last year, when Guwahati recorded the sales of around Rs 5.97 crore worth of liquor in two days, rounding off to approximately Rs 2.99 crore worth of alcohol on each day.

A few days ago, during the Durga Puja festival, the city saw a much higher sale of alcohol. During the three days of puja celebrations, alcohol worth Rs 22.05 crore was sold, averaging about Rs 7.33 crore worth of alcohol on each day. This too was a considerable increase compared to last year, when Rs 16.80 crore worth of alcohol was sold in just three days.

The actual quantities of alcohol, however, might not have been very different despite the difference in monetary value as the alcohol prices were increased earlier this year.
