All Assam Madrassa Students' Association opposes decision to close Madrassas

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Madrassa Students' Association (AAMSA) has opposed the decision taken by the State government to close Madrassa education in the State.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, AAMSA president Md. Wahiduzzaman said, "Since British era there has been Madrassa teaching in Assam. The State government has decided to close Madrassa education for polarization of the people of the State before the Assembly election. It's a political decision. Apart from Arabic subjects, all subjects like Science, Assamese, Mathematics, Social Sciences, History, etc are taught. Madassa schooled people are found to work at various levels as doctors, engineers, teachers, litterateurs, etc.

"Of late, the 42-year-old syllabi for Madrassas have been modernized. What can be the reason behind such a move to close Madrassa education?

"There are 707 Madrassa institutes in Assam where lakhs of students are studying. If Madrassas are closed, such students will have a bleak future. Instead of closing Madrassas, let the government appoint Madrassa teachers. The Assam government should also take steps to develop Madrassa and Sanskrit education the way the governments in UP, West Bengal, Orissa, Rajasthan, Bihar, Kerala etc carry on schemes."
