GUWAHATI: Demanding hikes in the fares of all buses, the AAMTA (All Assam Motor Transport Association ) submitted a memorandum to the Transport Commissioner here on Thursday. The Association also demanded that the authorities must issue a notification in this regard. They further demanded that the government must also stop toll-tax collection.

Mentioning in the memorandum that the Association will follow the COVID-related SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) issued by the authorities, AAMTA secretary-general, Pradip Das, however, pointed out, "By carrying only 50% passengers in each trip (as stipulated in the SOPs), we are unable to even purchase the daily requirement of fuel for our busses. Besides, we have to also ensure the salaries of our staff and transport-related taxes. The daily collections are simply not adequate for us to carry on our transport business."

He added, "Under the present circumstances, bus owners will have to sell off our busses."

Pointing out that the businessmen involved in the Public Transport sector did not get any help from the government during the recent lockdown period, Das sought cooperation from the government and also the public this time.
